When many people hear “PTSD,” they picture combat or war veterans. While military trauma is a very real cause, it’s only part of the story.
PTSD can affect anyone who has experienced trauma, including:
* Domestic abuse
* Childhood trauma
* Sexual assault
* Serious accidents
* Medical trauma
* Workplace incidents
* Sudden loss
* Natural disasters
And many other life-changing experiences.
Trauma doesn’t have a single face, and neither does PTSD.
Every person’s experience is different. Some people appear calm while fighting invisible battles every day. Others may struggle with anxiety, flashbacks, emotional numbness, hypervigilance, or avoiding situations that remind them of their trauma.
The most important thing we can offer isn’t judgement—it’s understanding.
This PTSD Awareness Month, let’s replace assumptions with compassion, educate ourselves, and remind those who are struggling that they are not alone.
Because not all wounds are visible, but every story deserves to be heard.
