Back to School: A Gentle Reminder for Parents 🎒💛

The new school year doesn’t have to start perfectly.

Your child might be excited. They might be nervous. They might be counting down the days… or wishing summer could last forever.

And you might be feeling a mixture of emotions too.

Remember:

🌱 Expect an adjustment period. Changes in routine can feel surprisingly big for children. Give them time to settle.

💬 Make space for feelings. “Are you excited?” isn’t the only question. Try, “How are you feeling about going back?” and let whatever comes up be okay.

🧠 Look beyond behaviour. Irritability, tears, tiredness or clinginess can sometimes be a child’s way of saying, “This is a lot for me.”

🤍 Connection comes before correction. A child who is struggling doesn’t always need a solution straight away. Sometimes they need to feel understood first.

☀️ And look after yourself too. Your child doesn’t need a perfectly calm, organised parent. They need a parent who is there, listening and doing their best.

There may be wobbles. There may be tears at the school gate. There may even be “I hate school!” after the first day.

That doesn’t mean you’ve got it wrong.

Starting again takes time.

Be gentle with them. And be gentle with yourself.
